Rowan Park Dedication Celebrates Transformational Investment in Muskegon Heights
MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, MI — The City of Muskegon Heights, in partnership with the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and Greater Muskegon Economic Development will host a dedication ceremony for the newly redeveloped Rowan Park on May 18 at 4:00 p.m. at Rowan Park, 2800 Maffett Street.
The celebration will mark the completion of significant park improvements, including a new splash pad, modern playground, and updated restroom facilities, creating a vibrant and accessible gathering space for residents and visitors.
Community members are invited to attend the event, which will bring together local leaders, project partners, and families to celebrate this important investment in Muskegon Heights’ future.
A Transformational Community Project
“The Rowan Park redevelopment represents a major milestone in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Muskegon Heights,” said Bonnie McLaughlin, Mayor of City of Muskegon Heights. “It’s in the heart of the community and has been reimagined as a safe, engaging, and inclusive public space designed for connection, recreation, and community pride.”
The project includes the installation of an interactive splash pad, new public restrooms, enhanced landscaping, and ADA-compliant improvements to ensure accessibility for all residents.
This effort was guided by community input through the Reaching NEW Muskegon Heights vision plan, reflecting the priorities and aspirations of residents.
Strong Partnerships and Investment
The redevelopment of Rowan Park was made possible through a collaborative funding effort totaling approximately $1.27 million. Major contributions include:
- $998,800 from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources SPARK Grant program through the Council of Michigan Foundations
- $250,000 from the Consumers Energy Foundation
- $20,000 from the Community Foundation for Muskegon County
Additional support and partnership were provided by the City of Muskegon Heights and Greater Muskegon Economic Development.

Supporting Downtown Revitalization
The Rowan Park project plays a key role in broader efforts to reinvigorate downtown Muskegon Heights. This project is part of a larger strategy to attract residents, visitors, and businesses. The park is designed to serve as a central gathering place and community anchor.
