Founded in 1962, Progressive Companies is headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with additional offices in Detroit, Michigan, and Asheville, Charlotte, Durham, and Greenville, North Carolina; with project work reaching 49 states and Puerto Rico. Their early relationship with Meijer, helped fuel their growth right from the start.
They design communities, engineer systems, and strategize solutions to complex problems. In practice, that means architecture; structural, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering; interior design; landscape architecture; master planning and zoning; sustainable and universal design; program and capital planning; construction management; and change-management consulting — all under one roof, so clients get a coordinated team instead of a stack of separate consultants.

Muskegon County has been a steady focus for Progressive Companies across healthcare, education, civic and waterfront work. They have been recently awarded the bid on the Third Street Wharf in the City of Muskegon, providing comprehensive design services as part of their continued work developing vibrant, people-first waterfront destinations.
Their recent and current work in Muskegon County includes:
- Trinity Health’s Muskegon campus – For over four decades, spanning the Muskegon Tower, Mercy Health facilities, and the historic Hackley and General Hospital buildings, Progressive Companies has been a steadfast partner. Our scope has included the Muskegon Health Pavilion medical office building, the Trinity Health Muskegon Conference Center, and the campus’ healing Prayer Garden.
- Muskegon Community College — Arts and Humanities Building, architectural and engineering services, as well as construction management services, supporting the college’s campus infrastructure.
- Muskegon County VanDyk Mortgage Convention Center – In 2021, Progressive Companies helped bring a transformative addition to downtown Muskegon, Michigan with the completion of the VanDyk Mortgage Convention Center.
- Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park – Progressive Companies provided master planning services for the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports park which encompasses approximately 60 acres of the 300-acre parcel which lies within the boundaries of the Muskegon State Park.
- Muskegon Food Agriculture Research & Manufacturing (FARM) Incubator – The Muskegon F.A.R.M. Incubator is an 8,000-square-foot facility designed to support commercial-grade fruit and vegetable processing while meeting USDA and FDA requirements. Serving as a hub for research, education, and economic development, the facility partners with Michigan State University and other educational affiliates to drive innovation in food processing.
- City of North Muskegon Master Plan & Zoning Ordinance – North Muskegon partnered with Progressive Companies to develop a new master plan and zoning ordinance to identify new development opportunities and improve quality of life.
- City of Muskegon — W. Western Avenue Rehabilitation, from the West End to Shoreline Drive, providing survey and design engineering for a key corridor.
- Muskegon County Shoreline Trails and Greenways Plan — a regional trail and greenway network along Lake Michigan connecting Muskegon and Ottawa counties, built around equity, safety, connectivity, and accessibility.
- West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission — resilience planning to help protect West Michigan communities and drowned river mouth systems.
That local work sits alongside a broader West Michigan portfolio — the Acrisure Amphitheater and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Holland Energy Park, and The Ecliptic at Rosa Parks Circle — which reflects just how deep their roots run across this region.
