The firm was established to fill a gap in the commercial construction world — one where clients are guided every step of the way and kept fully informed. “We walk clients through the entire process,” says President Brent Balkema. “Helping them understand all the costs associated, where it’s being spent, and why. Ultimately aiming to provide that comfort level to them.”

Though Journey works across Michigan, Muskegon County holds a special place in the company’s story. Balkema, who was born and raised in Muskegon, is proud to bring his work back to the community that shaped him.
“Muskegon means a lot to me,” he shares. What he enjoys most about doing business here is the familiarity — knowing every street, recognizing the businesses that have been here for years, and seeing the familiar faces he grew up with. He explains how it’s great to come back and “feel at home again.”

Journey Construction Group became an investor with Greater Muskegon Economic Development (GMED) in 2024, drawn to GMED’s mission of growing and supporting local business.
“The goals and initiatives behind GMED are very important,” says Balkema. “Providing opportunities for businesses to continue to grow and thrive but also attracting new investment to the area — it provides more opportunities for people in the county. Journey Construction lives and breathes that same mission and vision.”
Since joining GMED’s investor network, Journey has connected with new community partners and local business leaders. “They’ve been very helpful in reaching out to others who may need construction services,” Balkema says. “Whether it’s a small addition or a major project, they’ve helped us build new and existing relationships.”
