Wolverine Building Group: Master Builders with a Mission to Uplift Communities

Wolverine Building Group is one of Michigan’s most experienced and versatile general contractors — but what truly sets them apart is their people-first approach to building. Founded in 1939 as Wolverine Tile Company in Grand Rapids, the company has grown into a full-service partner across four core market segments: industrial, retail and restaurants, multi-unit housing (including apartments, student housing, and senior living), and culture and community — a focus that includes healthcare, education, and nonprofit projects.

In 2018, under new leadership, Wolverine sharpened its focus on community engagement and purpose-driven growth, guided by the belief that construction can be a catalyst for positive change. Today, the company blends technical excellence with a deep commitment to the people and places they serve.

Rooted in Experience, Focused on Impact

Wolverine’s mission to positively impact people and communities is more than a tagline — it’s a mindset that drives their work every day. That commitment shows up through initiatives like employee donation matching, corporate giving, and focused service projects designed to support the causes that matter most to their team and clients.

“What really makes us stand out from other general contractors is how we align with our clients and the long-term relationships we maintain,” says Drake Lambright, Business Development & Community Relations Specialist. “We don’t only show up and do work — we also give back, we invest, and we engage.”

That alignment extends beyond the jobsite. One of Wolverine’s core market segments is culture and community, which naturally brings them into partnership with clients who prioritize supporting their staff and the neighborhoods around them. “We align a lot of our community work with our clients and the community,” Lambright adds, “especially because so many of
them care deeply about giving back.”

A great example is their current collaboration with HPA Services, a Muskegon-based organization. Wolverine is supporting HPA with the construction of their first-ever owned group home, and they’re going beyond just building. The Wolverine marketing team is also helping HPA raise funds for the project’s capital campaign, providing support that combines both expertise and advocacy.

The Ethos of Master Builders

One philosophy sets Wolverine Building Group apart: every member of the team is a master of their craft. Whether it’s hands-on carpentry or accounting in the office, the team approaches their work with a deep respect for both the art and science of construction. By viewing each project holistically, Wolverine brings together precision and creativity to deliver something truly unique for every client.

This “Master Builder” ethos is more than a motto. It drives Wolverine to pursue excellence across every detail — from technical design to personal relationships — resulting in built environments that serve both purpose and people.

Growing Our Presence Along the Lakeshore

Wolverine has been working in Muskegon County for years, but recently, they’ve made a point to become more embedded in the community.

“We have always done work in Muskegon, but we just recently — within the past couple of years — started prioritizing having an established presence,” says Lambright. “Not just going and doing work but becoming actively engaged in the community.”

The company currently has five active projects in the area, including multi-unit affordable housing at Amity and Allen, an industrial facility for Rollon, Lake View Lofts, and a new Culver’s in Norton Shores. Looking ahead, “It’s an area we’re still gaining experience in — and it’s something we’re really excited to get involved with in the future,” Lambright adds.

Partnering with GMED for Long-Term Impact

Wolverine Building Group’s partnership with Greater Muskegon Economic Development (GMED) reflects their commitment to building not just structures, but long-term relationships in the communities where they work. As their presence in Muskegon County grows, they see GMED as a key ally in creating meaningful economic impact.

“As we expand our network, we also want to expand our partnerships — through the work we do and the relationships we build,” says Lambright. “That’s one of the reasons we’re really excited to partner with GMED — we want to be a part of the renaissance that is the growth of Muskegon.”

For Wolverine, the value of GMED goes beyond access to resources — it’s about being an active participant in shaping Muskegon County’s future. As Lambright puts it, “You can choose to be just supporters, which is great. However, without engagement and active partnership, you cannot expect to achieve your desired results.” That belief in collaboration and action drives Wolverine’s commitment to community-focused growth.

Through this partnership, Wolverine Building Group hopes to raise awareness about their capabilities and the value they can offer to both local businesses and the greater Muskegon County community. For them, it’s not just about building structures — it’s about building community.
